$4,000,000 in giving. In this age of billionaires pledging hundred million dollar donations to their favorite causes that is hardly headline news. But to glassybaby it represents a major milestone. It means we have sold more than a million glassybaby, touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who have benefited from our giving, held thousands of road shows and events, sent checks to hundreds of organizations, and worked closely with tens of ‘giving’ partners. All driven by selling one product.
The glassybaby business model – where we give away 10% of our revenue – is unique, powerful and hard. At scale it is an incredible force for good. But finding a wide variety of good partners, and working with them in ways that conform to our collective missions, create real value for our mutual donors and customers, and empower our respective employees, is challenging – particularly for a small company.
It is so worth it though. Working side by side with our partners has allowed us to experience the impact of our giving first hand. We have…
- seen the smiles on the faces of critically ill kids who can’t leave their rooms, as they enjoy the the toy cart we fund at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital
- gotten to know the nurses who are getting degrees we are underwriting, that they otherwise couldn’t afford
- helped feed thousands of families and veterans, who would otherwise go hungry over the holidays
- met and thanked the firefighters who battled the Chelan and Lake County fires this summer, supported in part by the glassybaby community’s generosity
Etc., Etc., Etc.
Now, when glassybaby shuts down this Wednesday (1/13/16), it will be an opportunity for all of us – including our glassblowers, logistics personnel and retail sales staff – to volunteer with one of our partners and remind ourselves why our 10% giving model is so special.
And this is just the beginning. By the end of 2020, we expect to have exceeded $22,000,000 in total giving. That may still not be headline news. But it will be a growing testament to the power of the glassybaby community to ‘be the change we wish to see in the world’. And it will all be driven by selling one product.
