Cab drivers have that urgency driving that I find so amusing. Their delivery of human cargo always seems cinematic. On Monday of last week a Yellow Cab careened up to the curb outside of our glssybaby store, depositing a gentleman and his young daughter. As they entered the store I told them that I was impressed by the flourish of their arrival. The gentleman quipped that he wished it had been a limousine.
They were on the 'glassybaby express' from Stockton California...a father/daughter visit to cousins coupled by an important trip for Mom to glassybaby. (She had seen us on Martha.)
The visual was wonderful... Dad sitting on our diminutive white bench, usually reserved for children, his daughter, I'm guessing 10 or 11, on the cell phone to her Mom in Stockton...carefully lighting, kibitzing and finally choosing glassybaby. A colorful mix of 5 was going home to Mom, a Turquoise to Auntie and a Wet Dog to Grandma. (They explained that Grandma recently decided not to get a puppy, a tough decision; however Dogs come is many forms and the glassybaby alternative to puppy breath was chosen to add levity.) Then off they went to catch the #2 bus downtown...what great out of town guests to glassybaby.
On another note, we have the most loyal and amazing staff...great fabric is woven from our mix. Debra Richman, our tenured, dogged accountant conveyed something so touching and personal to us. Sadly, her mother passed away recently. Debbie, grieving, felt the need for peacefulness and connectivity to her family. What she did is so beautiful. One evening, she called her sister, her daughter, her step daughter, her sister in law and her best friend...she asked each woman to light their glassybaby, creating a kind of vigil, a beautiful remembrance of Debbie's mom, a glassybaby labyrinth. Debbie explained that this brought her an overwhelming sense of peace...just what she had been yearning for.
Finally...Jean, our superstar Production Manager, made my day last Friday with the simplest, beautiful message...it was signature Jean. She sweetly advised me to visit the beach at Golden Gardens with my daughter as it was the lowest tide of the year...she added: "It's my favorite holiday."
Until Next Time, Nicola

What wonderful imagery. We, too, use our glassybaby for vigils and observations of those near and far away. There is something about small bits of light and color. It helps us celebrate our lives, perhaps. Thank you for the words.
