I receive a wonderful word sleuthing email from wordsmith.org. Anu Garg, the author and founder of the site provides a word theme for the week, then sends a word out daily within this theme...so edifying. Today's latin themed word was: lares and penates, pronounced: LAR-eez and puh-NAY-teez. One of the two definitions given?..."Household goods: a family's treasured possessions." It struck me that this is a marvelous, erudite and splashy way to describe glassybaby. A usage sentence might go something like: "glassybaby are the sought after lares and penates of any well appointed home." The other definition given was: "Household gods: the benevolent gods in an ancient Roman household." Too much of a stretch.
However, if you attended the seconds sale last weekend, you might ponder the deification quotient of glassybaby. The sale was a wonderful romp as usual. Throngs of ladies and a few gentlemen lined up in the brisk January cold. They spilled through our doors at 10am, and herein began the morning seconds vigil. Anywhere that there was concrete real estate, customers set up their encampments, lovingly lighting each second in search of possibility. When the switch went on, had they found a beauty? Thousands of beauties went out the door and it was truly awesome. Thank you to our brave customers.
One of my favorite, smart, customers, Quynh, has moved to Paris. I have received the sweetest email missives from her. Despite lost luggage and a touch of homesickness surrounding inauguration day she has settled nicely. She brought 3 glassyaby with her as a cherished reminder of home. Quynh, know that I can close my eyes and easily find myself enjoying a crepe and a glass of wine with you in the 1st Arrondissement.
End note...news flash on new colors. We have just rolled out 3 new beauties:
- life guard
- smooch
- true blue
There is something inherently, whimsically, philosophical in the combination of these three color names. I may have to consult my 17 year old niece.
