Harbinger and crazy story...a bat flew in to our University Village store and Mackenzie our wonderful, life-er, sales darling, flew immediately to the back of the store in horror. Melanie, our powerhouse of scheduling and store management, stayed in the store with the bat. Apparently among so many of her roles she is also a bat whisperer. With the presence of mind of both a zoologist and an Art History professor (true fact) she cornered the wee bat in one of our shadow boxes/glassybaby bat habitats. She then slid a shipping cardboard square across the top of the shadow box, slid the contained mammal across the floor and set the little guy free into the University Village wilderness...perfect. The harbinger part? Bats conjure visions of Halloween. As previously blogged upon, a great halloween costume idea? Go as a glassybaby. It's original, colorful and the hot tip of the coming season.
I adore our customer Margie. I can count on her annual visit to glassybaby, always in the summer time and always with the same mission. She buys, I believe, seven individually boxed glassybaby, in the same color. They are gifts to her 'girls.' This family of mothers, daughters, aunts and nieces gather at the Washington coast beach for a weekend together. The tradition is 25 years strong and counting. For the past few years, Margie has added glassybaby gifts to the mix. So, all of these women are connected through the same glassybaby collection, a talisman of sorts to their beach union. So sweet, and poetically this year the color was 'beach.' Margie just called upon us again this week. She is hatching a plan to give glassybaby as Christmas gifts. Her theme every year is "our favorite things." We made it into the pantheon of Margie and her husband's 'favorite things'...we love it.
So often the 'out of towners' make glassybaby a part of their Seattle itinerary. A lovely customer from Cape Cod was in this week with her little nephew who lives in Seattle. Their Madrona mission was first a visit to our neighbor and darling toy store named Precocious where nephew got to choose his birthday present. Second Madrona stop?...glassybaby, where Auntie got to choose her perfect feng shui glassybaby duo present to self. She and her husband's newly painted bedroom will be receiving the perfectly balanced his/her pairing of chocolate cherry and prom dress. Ahhhh.
Until Next Time, Nicola
