Our sweet "orphans" have all been adopted. Slightly imperfect to our glass artisans’ exacting standards, but quite perfect to our discerning customers’ eyes, glassybaby "seconds" are now spreading light and love in new homes. And we have added wonderful, new friends to our glassybaby community.
Last Saturday, a line of patient Seconds Sale fans (well-supplied with coffee and camp chairs, lighters and baskets) began to form in the early hours. Despite the wait and the chill, the good cheer was contagious. And we were so moved and inspired by stories of how people arrived at our doorstep:
♥ A morning news story on King 5 lured visitors-from Utah and Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Los Angeles-out of their cozy hotels to join the "joyous mayhem" and buy their first glassybaby.
♥ Sisters from Montana, waiting vigil as their mother underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer, came via taxi from the hospital waiting room to choose a votive to light for her.
♥ A young fan (favorite glassybaby color: hudson) and Seconds Sale vet, returned with mom, dad, big brother-and all chose favorite colors. This sweet young man plans to explore glassblowing at our local arts school, Coyote Central.
♥ Two Seattle Cancer Care Alliance oncology nurses, arrived right from their shift-still in scrubs. Inspired by their visit and their good work, glassybaby is donating $5000 of Seconds Sale proceeds to SCCA.
As Lee told the news crew that morning, "When you're sick, the best thing to do is build a community and the best way to do that is to have something to build it around...glassybaby is an object but it's also a community that we all love and share."
Finally, we salute all of you who made a lighter footprint by bringing your own boxes, bags, and baskets, including Juli Price with her ingenious wine storage cube and pats of reused bubble wrap, perfect for safely transporting the bouquet of glassybaby she took home to love.
Thank you, old friends. And to the new: a very warm welcome to our community.
