Our children sent me a basket of fruity delights a couple of years ago when we were off on a trip and I'll never forget it:
So sweet and so very thoughtful. But on this day I can't help but think mainly of memories of my dear mother and my wonderful mother-in-law. Usually we aim to pay-it-forward, but Mother's Day always finds me nostalgic too!
I have amazing daughters-in-law who are teaching me immeasurable lessons about mothering. I watch in awe everyday as they address with grace and fairness new issues that were never in my repertoire. They make my life complete. I am so grateful.
One day out of the year cannot do justice to the love and appreciation we have for our mothers. To all the mothers of the world we at glassybaby would like to send expressions of honor and celebration for the megatons of enlightenment and guidance you have provided your young: Happy Mother's Day! You deserve it, girlfriends!
A few recent narratives from our stores made me reflect on how glassybaby can be part of the battle with cancer and "bring a little light": A customer came in to celebrate the end of her cancer treatment and bought herself a "lollipop" and a "bff," two eye-popping colors jolly enough to demonstrate her sunny mood.
Another woman had been in treatment for cancer previously and had just received the news that after ten years, she was cancer free! She jubilantly purchased the ever popular "jane's caramel" to commemorate the occasion and to help support a University of Washington graduate oncology nursing student.
"jane's caramel" is so named for Lee's stepmother and my dear friend, Jane Cummings, who twice defeated non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Jane was nurse manager for inpatient oncology services at UW and was first diagnosed in 1994. Her Grandma Libby provided the scrumptious recipe for the caramels that Jane still fixes every Christmas for friends and family, and which Lee's sister, B.G., cooks up for her customers at Mouth Party Caramels. The glassybaby, "jane's caramel," has a gorgeous chameleon affect - no two are alike - just like the personalities of the myriad nurses who so selflessly look after their patients. See for yourself:
Speaking of serving others, the nationwide network of Fisher Houses are "homes away from home" for families of both our esteemed Veterans and active-duty service men and women who are receiving care at VA and other health care facilities. We so admire the blue-ribbon, cheerful spirit of how the local Puget Sound Fisher House cares for its people, heart and soul, recently demonstrated with a Royal Wedding celebration. Cecile and Lorraine, the amazing management team, organized hat decorating, wake up calls, refreshments, and a goodly dose of camaraderie! On behalf of glassybaby, Marie and Christianna brought party cupcakes and a donation check to help with the house's weekly grocery bills. As you can see, Cecile, Christianna, Lorraine, and Marie, decked out in their wedding-festive chapeaux, were ready to kick up their heels in the esprit de corps of the day:
I hope you all have a wonderful week. I know I will, for our son and his family are returning after seven months in France and I can hardly wait for long hugs. It will be the best Mother's Day gift ever. We will light glassybaby galore!
